Business Mission Statement

My company is a hookah bar called Up In Smoke. The company is a hookah bar looking to attract college students and young adults. I am the owner and CEO of this company. I want the look to be hip and modern, I believe this will help attract my target audience. The logo could also include (at the designer's discretion), a cloud of smoke. I plan to make money by charging customers to smoke the tobacco out of our hookahs. I do not want to sell tobacco at the shop. I don't need a mascot. I would just need a logo, a letterhead and business card, all with a similar theme that encapsulates the modern look I envision. I believe that my business will stand out from other hookah bars because of its hip and modern look, rather than the outdated hookah bars I've been to in the past.

Redesigned Logo for AAA

Logo Redesign

For my logo redesign, I decided to do the AAA logo. It is a very simple and somewhat boring logo, my hope is to give the logo a kickstart into the 21st century. My hope is to keep the logo recognizable, and in the red, white and blue colors, while still updating it.

Starbucks Hw

I understand the point this article about Starbucks is trying to make. After many years of having successful designs, the mermaid is now part of Starbucks, therefore it is recognizable as the Starbucks logo, without actually displaying the name. I believe this effect can only come after having a long-standing, well designed logo. Many logos have followed in this trend over the last few years, one that comes to mind is Pepsi. They changed from their traditional logo with the Pepsi name, to just the circular logo facing sideways. Making a logo switch like this can backfire as well, it only comes after years of perfecting a logo.

Movie Poster Project

The title of my movie is "The Morning After". It's about a guy who forgets everything about himself after a long night of partying.

Movie Story

My movie is called Blackout. It's about a man who forgets everything about himself after a long night of partying. I am the main star of the movie, along with Ed Norton, who plays a friend, helping me get my memory back. The movie is a drama/comedy and is shot in black and white.

Album Cover

My faux album cover is intended to be a heavy metal band. I chose these colors because of the high contrast and the darkness that goes along with heavy metal.

My Movie Poster

This is a movie poster for the movie Se7en. I really like this poster and have it hanging in my room. I like this poster because it shows the best scene from the movie. I really like the color choices as well. The dark blue and the brown of the ground match well together. This poster is also very cool to me because it shows the most important character (who was only in the movie for about 20 minutes).

Functional and Non Functional Products

For my functional product, I chose to make a bug spray perfume called Fly Away. I went with a sort of vintage look for the ad, as I wanted it to have a 1950's feel to it.

For my non-functional product and layout, I chose to make Sponge Shoes. They are shoes with sponges on the bottom so you can mop your floor by walking. Because this was my non-functional product, I also went with a non-functional layout.

Design Ideas

I have a general idea of what I would like my layout to look like. For my first product, I am doing a bug  spray perfume. I plan on doing this layout as my good one, with a 1950s vintage magazine feel. My second product is going to be a type of alcohol similar to Dippin' Dots. I plan on calling them Dot Shots, and making this layout a more up to date and sleek design. I have most of my images already selected, now I just have to see which images fit and which ones don't.

Questions

1. I have a good amount of computer experience. I am very familiar with Photoshop and InDesign. I am beginning to learn how to use illustrator. I've been using Photoshop and Indesign for about 4 years. My experience ranges from school use to creating menus and flyers for jobs.

2. I have a pretty good grip on Photoshop, but you can always learn something. I have a little experience in Illustrator, but hope to learn more this semester about Illustrator.

3. I have an Asus Laptop with Windows 7 running system. I have the full versions of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator on it, but have barely used Illustrator.

4. My major is computer graphic design.

5. I hope to learn many new techniques that I can use to help grow my freelancing. I hope to become fluent in Illustrator after this class.

6. My favorite artist is Marcel Duchamp. I like Duchamp because he does not conform to the normal guidelines of art. He has a bold and brash style that I really like.

7. My favorite musician is Dave Grohl. He's played in many bands that I like (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age).

8. During my free time, I design menus and flyers for clients as well as produce art prints for a website.

9. I heard a noise and awoke from a deep sleep. I got dressed quickly and ran to the front door. What I saw was amazing. There was a giraffe in the middle of the street. Yes, a giraffe in the street.
